TEXAS CWD TESTING 2013-2014 TO DATE

Greetings TexasHuntFish, and all of Texas hunters et al,

well, once again, seems the TexasHuntFish.com is having issues with my posting of CWD and technical issues again.

seems those pesky cwd prions just don’t post well at that site, even when it’s good news.

another posting has disappeared, so for those that are writing me and asking me why, I haven’t a clue, other than TexasHuntFish.com told me they were having technical issues again.

so, I will take their word on that.

however, I thought I would just make a blog on it so those that wanted that information can have it.

even though the cache has been deleted, there is still a record of post here @ TexasHuntFish, for now ;

Mr. Singeltary,

We continue to collect CWD samples from hunter-harvested deer as the MLDP season continues. You can find the 2013-14 test results for samples collected in the Trans Pecos region on our website:

We have submitted 270 samples to date, and I believe we have received results for 263 of those samples so far, with no new detections of CWD. All samples submitted were collected at our CWD check stations in the Trans Pecos region. Samples collected elsewhere in Texas will be submitted for testing over the next several weeks.

Sincerely,

Mitch Lockwood

Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy TSE PRION update January 2, 2014

*** chronic wasting disease, there was no absolute barrier to conversion of the human prion protein.

*** Furthermore, the form of human PrPres produced in this in vitro assay when seeded with CWD, resembles that found in the most common human prion disease, namely sCJD of the MM1 subtype.

http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/20/1/13-0858_article.htm

*** The potential impact of prion diseases on human health was greatly magnified by the recognition that interspecies transfer of BSE to humans by beef ingestion resulted in vCJD. While changes in animal feed constituents and slaughter practices appear to have curtailed vCJD, there is concern that CWD of free-ranging deer and elk in the U.S. might also cross the species barrier. Thus, consuming venison could be a source of human prion disease. Whether BSE and CWD represent interspecies scrapie transfer or are newly arisen prion diseases is unknown. Therefore, the possibility of transmission of prion disease through other food animals cannot be ruled out. There is evidence that vCJD can be transmitted through blood transfusion. There is likely a pool of unknown size of asymptomatic individuals infected with vCJD, and there may be asymptomatic individuals infected with the CWD equivalent. These circumstances represent a potential threat to blood, blood products, and plasma supplies.

I agree with you Dr Terry. The OIE, namely the International Animal Health Code Commission is working on making proposals to Member Countries to change the OIE lists so to avoid some the problems mentioned in you e-mail. This will take at least two years before adoption by the International Committee. For BSE, countries asked the OIE to post information on BSE on the OIE web site.

Personally, I am interested in Chronic Wasting Disease and I follow what is distributed through ProMed. Delegates of OIE Member Countries can propose diseases to be added to the list.

Kind regards.
