ABSTRACT
Prior to the start of Fiscal Year (FY) 2024, chronic wasting disease (CWD) had been identified in 7 distinct areas in Pennsylvania: a captive cervid facility in Adams County (2012); multiple captive cervid facilities and free-ranging deer in Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Cumberland, Franklin, Fulton, Huntingdon, Juniata, Mifflin, Perry, Snyder, Somerset, and Westmoreland counties (2012-2023); multiple captive cervid facilities in Clearfield and Jefferson counties and multiple free-ranging deer in Armstrong, Clearfield, Indiana, and Jefferson counties (2014-2023); three captive cervid facilities in Lancaster County (2018-2022); one captive cervid facility in Warren County (2020); one captive facility in Lycoming County (2021); and two free-ranging deer in Dauphin County (2023). Executive Orders were issued following these detections by the Pennsylvania Game Commission to establish CWD Disease Management Areas (DMAs) where regulations were put into place to minimize the transmission and spread of CWD and surveillance activities were intensified. Surveillance for CWD in Pennsylvania’s free-ranging and escaped captive cervids is conducted statewide and throughout the year with sampling efforts focused within the DMAs. The broad aims of this surveillance program are to: 1) monitor the occurrence and distribution of the disease in free-ranging cervids in DMAs, and 2) identify new introductions of CWD in areas outside the DMAs. During FY2024, active and targeted surveillance resulted in a total of 13,926 deer samples that were collected and tested for CWD including: 8,243 (59%) from hunter-harvested white-tailed deer; 5,014 (36%) road-killed white-tailed deer; 213 (2%) clinical suspect white-tailed deer (i.e., exhibiting clinical signs consistent with CWD); 378 from
40001 2
targeted removal (3%); and 78 (<1%) deer that were sampled for other reasons not listed above.
Of the 13,926 deer samples tested: 5,539 (40%) were from DMA 2; 1,921 (14%) were from DMA 3; 124 (1%) were from DMA 4; 196 (1%) were from DMA 5; 28 (<1%) were from DMA 6; 508 (4%) were from DMA 7; 1,059 (8%) were from DMA 8, and 150 (1%) were from DMA 9. CWD was detected in 530 free-ranging deer sampled during the 2024-25 season. Of the 530 positive deer, 505 were from DMA 2 including 356 hunter-harvested, 86 road-killed, 32 clinical suspect, 30 research deer, 1 permitted deer, and 2 targeted removal deer; 8 were from DMA 3 including 3 hunter-harvested, 1 road-killed deer, 1 clinical suspect, and 3 targeted removal deer; and 3 were from DMA 8 including 1 hunter-harvested and 2 road-killed deer. Samples were also collected from 137 elk during 2024-25. These samples include 101 (74%) hunter-harvested elk, 4 (3%) clinical suspects, 2 (1%) road-killed, 5 permitted (4%) and 25 (18%) animals that were sampled for other reasons. No elk tested positive for CWD during 2024. Since 2012, CWD has been detected in Pennsylvania at 71 captive cervid facilities and in 2,424 free-ranging deer.
OBJECTIVES
1. Provide statewide surveillance for the presence of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in free- ranging and escaped captive deer and elk within Pennsylvania.
2. Define the occurrence and geographic distribution of CWD within the Disease Management Areas (DMAs) where CWD has been detected.
3. Continue to improve surveillance and monitoring efficiency through improvements in infrastructure, sampling strategies, and data management.
4. Continue to train personnel to recognize diagnostic characteristics of CWD suspects, collect carcasses, and extract and preserve diagnostic tissue samples for testing.
5. Continue to work with other state and federal agencies through the Interagency CWD Task Force to develop a strategic program for the prevention, early detection, and management of CWD in free-ranging and captive cervids throughout all regions of the state.

ABSTRACT

Prior to the start of Fiscal Year (FY) 2023, chronic wasting disease (CWD) had been identified in 7 distinct areas in Pennsylvania: a captive cervid facility in Adams County (2012); multiple captive cervid facilities and free-ranging deer in Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Cumberland, Franklin, Fulton, Huntingdon, Juniata, Mifflin, Perry, Snyder, Somerset, and Westmoreland counties (2012-2023); multiple captive cervid facilities in Clearfield and Jefferson counties and multiple free-ranging deer in Armstrong, Clearfield, Indiana, and Jefferson counties (2014-2023); three captive cervid facilities in Lancaster County (2018-2022); one captive cervid facility in Warren County (2020); one captive facility in Lycoming County (2021); and two free-ranging deer in Dauphin County (2023). Executive Orders were issued following these detections by the Pennsylvania Game Commission (Game Commission) to establish CWD Disease Management Areas (DMAs) where regulations were put into place to minimize the transmission and spread of CWD and surveillance activities were intensified. Surveillance for CWD in Pennsylvania’s free- ranging and escaped captive cervids is conducted statewide and throughout the year with sampling efforts focused within the DMAs. The broad aims of this surveillance program are to: 1) monitor the occurrence and distribution of the disease in free-ranging cervids in DMAs, and 2) identify new introductions of CWD in areas outside the DMAs. During FY 2023, active and targeted surveillance resulted in a total of 11,163 deer samples that were collected and tested for CWD including: 7,160 (64%) from hunter-harvested white-tailed deer; 3,609 (32%) road-killed white-

40001 2

tailed deer; 221 (2%) clinical suspect white-tailed deer (i.e., exhibiting clinical signs consistent with CWD); 107 from targeted removal (1%); and 66 (<1%) deer that were sampled for other reasons not listed above. Of the 11,163 deer samples tested: 4,813 (43%) were from DMA 2; 1,346 (12%) were from DMA 3; 172 (2%) were from DMA 4; 201 (2%) were from DMA 5; 28 (<1%) were from DMA 6; 489 (4%) were from DMA 7; and 1,068 (10%) were from DMA 8. Chronic wasting disease was detected in 472 free-ranging deer sampled during the 2023-24 season. Of the 472 positive deer, 469 were from DMA 2 including 292 hunter-harvested, 124 road-killed, 43 clinical suspect, 8 research deer, 1 permitted deer, and 1 deer that died for unknown reasons; and 2 road-killed deer in DMA 3; and 1 road-killed deer in DMA 8. Samples were also collected from 129 elk during 2023-24. These samples include 103 (80%) hunter-harvested elk, 8 (6%) clinical suspects, 3 (2%) road-killed, 1 permitted (<1%) and 14 (11%) animals that were sampled for other reasons. No elk tested positive for CWD during 2023. Since 2012, CWD has been detected in Pennsylvania at 56 captive cervid facilities and in 1,893 free-ranging deer.

OBJECTIVES

USDA TO PGC ONCE CAPTIVES ESCAPE

*** "it‘s no longer its business.”

http://chronic-wasting-disease.blogspot.com/2013/01/usda-to-pgc-once-captives-escape-its-no.html

=== ”The occurrence of CWD must be viewed against the contest of the locations in which it occurred. It was an incidental and unwelcome complication of the respective wildlife research programmes. Despite it’s subsequent recognition as a new disease of cervids, therefore justifying direct investigation, no specific research funding was forthcoming. The USDA veiwed it as a wildlife problem and consequently not their province!” page 26.

Pennsylvania Confirms First Case CWD Adams County Captive Deer Tests Positive

http://chronic-wasting-disease.blogspot.com/2012/10/pennsylvania-confirms-first-case-cwd.html

Greetings Pennsylvania Hunters et al,

Folks, the Cervid, and more, are in dire straits if we don’t bust a move now, I’m telling you, it’s going to take all hands on deck, to combat the cwd tse prion, and you will have to hit it from all sides, everything we have, you are either all in, or, you are part of the problem. You let this cwd tse PrP saturate the environment, strains mutate, tse jumps species become zoonotic, if that has not already happened. Some recent video presentations on cwd, and my submission today, to TAHC, for anyone interested, it’s just science…

Preliminary Outbreak Assessment

Chronic wasting disease prions in cervids and wild pigs in North America

26 January 2026

Disease report

“They analysed over 300 brain and lymph node samples from 178 wild pigs living across Arkansas and Texas, USA…the researchers identified CWD prions in up to 37% of the lymph node samples and 15% of brain samples. The lowest detection rates were in the Texas samples (below 16%), matching the lower CWD prevalence in the state’s cervid population.”
