Chronic Wasting Disease fears prompt new authority for Pennsylvania Game Commission director

Chronic Wasting Disease, which is always fatal in white-tailed deer and other cervids it infects, has been found 10 miles south of the Maryland-Pennsylvania border, the Pennsylvania Game Commission says. Pennsylvania wildlife officials are prepared to go on the offensive against a devastating white-tailed deer disease found just 10 miles from the state’s southern border.
The state Board of Game Commissioners on Tuesday gave preliminary approval to new emergency powers aimed at limiting the risk of the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease.
Officials in Pennsylvania and New Jersey have tested for the disease for more than a decade and have yet to confirm it in wild or captive herds.
But it’s already struck wild populations of antlered animals known as cervids — the classification of deer, elk and moose — in Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming, according to the Chronic Wasting Disease Alliance. In Canada, the alliance says, it's struck cervids in Alberta and Saskatchewan.
Among captive cervids, it's been confirmed in Montana, Michigan, Missouri and Oklahoma, according to the alliance, which was formed in 2002 by the Boone and Crockett Club, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and Mule Deer Foundation.
The contagious, neurological disease deteriorates infected animals’ brains, resulting in emaciation, abnormal behavior, loss of bodily functions and death.
“Currently, there is no evidence that CWD poses a risk for humans,” the alliance says on its website. “However, public health officials recommend that human exposure to the CWD infectious agent be avoided as they continue to evaluate any potential health risk.”
Pennsylvania Game Commission spokesman Jerry Feaser says the disease has been found about 10 miles from the Maryland border with south-central Pennsylvania.
The emergency authority that the commission board granted to Executive Director Carl G. Roe allows him to stop importation of cervid parts from areas known to harbor the disease. It also gives him power to designate disease-management areas in Pennsylvania.
***
Disease-management areas
Once an area is designated, the executive director can use his emergency authority to: •allow the killing of cervids “without regard to established seasons and bag limits and methods of take” •prohibit the use, collection, possession and exportation of cervid urine-based attractants •prohibit the feeding of cervids
“It’s not a given that everything on that list is going to be implemented,” Pennsylvania Game Commission spokesman Jerry Feaser said. “That’s kind of like giving him a toolbox with a bunch of tools in it.”

Greetings PA hunters et al,
I don't have much hope for Pennsylvania Game Commission and any Chronic Wasting Disease CWD efforts put forth, there from. The only thing they chose to do about CWD over the past 8 years or so, was to ban anyone from speaking about it, and or bringing science to their site warning of the ramifications of ignoring it, and or letting anyone speak of it.
I only hope that this new authority in PA on CWD, does not ban the speaking about it. I think this new authority on in PA on CWD, has an open mind, and welcomes the talking, and sharing of science about CWD. IN the past, the PA CWD officials wished to ban all talk about CWD. I had been on the site for some time posting CWD/TSE science, with some 129 posts, when out of the blue, the PA CWD officials said i could never speak about CWD again on their site, and then banned me. you can read the emails for yourself from Samuel, plain as day censorship. they stripped years of science i had posted on their site, and deleted it all.
I have never been anti-hunter, anti-meat. I simply want the truth and science known to all.
SO, i only hope that when the TSE does hit the fan in PA, the hunters, the consumers, everyone, i only hope they can all discuss this devastating disease. IF not, PA CWD officials will reap what they sew.
IF AND WHEN CWD becomes documented in Pennsylvania, it will not be because i did NOT try to warn them. Only a few states and or hunting boards have ever done this. MOST welcome the science. however, some choose to ignore the CWD and other TSE risk factors, hoping it just goes away. This is what the state of Pennsylvania chose to do. they rolled the CWD TSE prion dice, and they must reap what the sew, when and if it is finally documented. it's like trying to close the mad cow barn door after decades of ignoring it. it's just too damn late by then. Ignorance, greed, government and the industry is what fuels these TSE's. ...TSS

Greetings State of PA hunters et al,
SEEMS Big Brother is working everywhere these days. after 8 years of trying to warn hunters about CWD on many boards in many states, i find a new low in the state of PA. Banning and deleting postings TSS or anyone from speaking about CWD evidently. the only thing i ever posted was the latest on CWD from some of the top peer review papers to date, and some old confidential data (with references and sources pdf files) for all to see. but evidently, after just trying to warn these hunters, and have been since Sept. 2002 with not one complaint waged against me that i am aware of, the Pennsylvania Game Commission Law and Law Makers board has banned me from speaking about CWD. NOT only on that board, but any board at ;

Release #143-05
GAME COMMISSION BANS IMPORTATION OF CERTAIN CARCASS PARTS FROM STATES WITH CWD
Using newly-granted emergency powers, Pennsylvania Game Commission Executive Director Vern Ross today issued an order banning the importation of specific carcass parts from states and Canadian provinces where CWD had been identified in free-ranging cervid populations.
The ban closely mirrors a similar ban issued on Sept. 21 by the state Department of Agriculture, with the support of the Game Commission. Agriculture Secretary Dennis Wolff used his emergency powers to issue the ban pending action by the Board of Game Commissioners to grant similar emergency powers to the agency's executive director.
"With chronic wasting disease (CWD) present in free-ranging and captive wildlife populations in 14 states and two Canadian provinces, we must act responsibly and clearly to protect our wild and captive populations of deer and elk, as well as other cervid family members," Ross said. "This ban applies to carcass parts from deer, elk or other cervids susceptible to CWD taken from the wild or from captive facilities in those states where CWD has been found in wild herds.
"There are many scientific unknowns about CWD, so this order may need to be altered in the future based on new discoveries, as well as new states that find CWD within their borders or other species that prove susceptible to the disease."

Terry,
I have to request that you discontinue from posting information on CWD. I have received concerns from individuals on the validity of your information. Since I am not educated on the subject, I cannot validate that the information is correct and or factual. As time moves on, this subject will become quite a "touchy subject" and any information, factual or not, will be scrutinized. From now on, we will have to rely on the PGC to educate the residents here in PA on the subject.
Thank you for your concern in this matter and keeping a close vigil on the topic.

now, what about those 'deer scents' of 100% urine', and the prion that is found in urine, why not just pass the prion with the urine to other deer...

IN CONFIDENCE
Perceptions of unconventional slow virus diseases of animals in the USA
Spraker suggested an interesting explanation for the occurrence of CWD. The deer pens at the Foot Hills Campus were built some 30-40 years ago by a Dr. Bob Davis. At or about that time, allegedly, some scrapie work was conducted at this site. When deer were introduced to the pens they occupied ground that had previously been occupied by sheep. Whether they were scrapie infected sheep or not is unclear.

Dear Mr Elmhirst,
CREUTZFELDT-JAKOB DISEASE (CJD) SURVEILLANCE UNIT REPORT
Thank you for your recent letter concerning the publication of the third annual report from the CJD Surveillance Unit. I am sorry that you are dissatisfied with the way in which this report was published.
The Surveillance Unit is a completely independant outside body and the Department of Health is committed to publishing their reports as soon as they become available. In the circumstances it is not the practice to circulate the report for comment since the findings of the report would not be amended. In future we can ensure that the British Deer Farmers Association receives a copy of the report in advance of publication.
The Chief Medical Officer has undertaken to keep the public fully informed of the results of any research in respect of CJD. This report was entirely the work of the unit and was produced completely independantly of the the Department.
The statistical results reqarding the consumption of venison was put into perspective in the body of the report and was not mentioned at all in the press release. Media attention regarding this report was low key but gave a realistic presentation of the statistical findings of the Unit. This approach to publication was successful in that consumption of venison was highlighted only once by the media ie. in the News at one television proqramme.
I believe that a further statement about the report, or indeed statistical links between CJD and consumption of venison, would increase, and quite possibly give damaging credence, to the whole issue. From the low key media reports of which I am aware it seems unlikely that venison consumption will suffer adversely, if at all.
